Keyboard shortcuts

Every JimiOS shortcut uses Option (⌥), so plain letters and your apps’ own shortcuts still work. The modifiers must match exactly: ⌥H is a JimiOS key, ⌘⌥H is not.

Press ⌥/ at any time to see the keys that are active on your Mac.

JimiOS has two sets of direction keys. Only one set is active at a time, chosen by the direction_keys setting.

  • Arrows (default). ⌃⌥ arrows focus, ⌃⌥⇧ arrows and ⌥⇧ arrows move. ⌥H/J/K/L and ⌥⇧H/J/K/L reach your apps as usual.
  • h/j/k/l. ⌥H/J/K/L focus, ⌥⇧H/J/K/L move. All the arrow chords reach your apps instead, so ⌥⇧ arrow selects by word again.

In both modes ⌥ arrow (jump a word) reaches your apps. To switch, see Switch to h/j/k/l keys.

Arrows (default) h/j/k/l mode What it does
⌥R (Option-R) ⌥R Next layout on this workspace: dwindle right → dwindle left → master
⌃⌥ ← ↓ ↑ → (Control-Option-arrows) ⌥ H J K L Focus the window left, down, up or right. At the left or right edge: the screen beside, then the previous or next workspace. Down at the bottom edge shows the overflow row; up hides it.
⌃⌥⇧ ← ↓ ↑ → (Control-Option-Shift-arrows) ⌥⇧ H J K L Move the focused window left, down, up or right. At the left or right edge: to the screen beside, then to the previous or next workspace.
⌥1 … ⌥9 (Option-1 to 9) ⌥1 … ⌥9 Show workspace 1 to 9
Keys What it does
⌥⇧ ← ↓ ↑ → (Option-Shift-arrows) Move the window, the same as ⌃⌥⇧ arrows. Arrows mode only.
⌥⇧Space (Option-Shift-Space) Float the focused window, or tile it again
⌥⇧1 … ⌥⇧9 (Option-Shift-1 to 9) Send the focused window to workspace 1 to 9
⌥T (Option-T) Flip the focused split: side by side or stacked
⌥F (Option-F) Fill the tiling area with the focused window, or put it back
⌥⇧0 (Option-Shift-0) Reset every split on this workspace to 50 %
⌥⇧R (Option-Shift-R) Rotate this workspace’s windows one tile clockwise
⌥B (Option-B) Next focus-border lighting mode
⌥/ (Option-slash) Show or hide the shortcuts panel
⌃⌥⌘Escape (Control-Option-Command-Escape) Panic: put every window back and quit
Escape Close the shortcuts panel, or a message that stays on screen (only then is Escape kept from your app)

While JimiOS runs (and isn’t paused), these keys no longer type their special characters or select by word: ⌥F (ƒ), ⌥R (®), ⌥⇧R (‰) and, in arrows mode, ⌥⇧ arrows. Choose Pause tiling from the menu to get them back for a while.

⌥- (Option-minus) and ⌥= (Option-equals) no longer set how many tiles a workspace holds. They now reach your apps.
